The Beginning of the End

This past Saturday might have been one of the best days in recent years for sports fans. It began with a slate of six college football games where each team was ranked. These were followed by two intense playoff Major League Baseball games. The premier matchup of the week was the Tennessee Volunteers who faced the Alabama Crimson Tide. Tennessee was ranked sixth and Alabama was ranked third nationally. My favorite team, the Penn State Nittany Lions, were ranked tenth and were facing the fifth ranked Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor. My team played horrible throughout the first half but still managed to hold a lead within the final minutes. They went into halftime only down 16-14 and we needed to play perfect to have a chance at pulling off the upset. We unfortunately did the very opposite and Michigan ran away in the third quarter by scoring whenever they touched the ball. We ended up losing the game 41-17 and it looks like the beginning of the end for our season. We play Minnesota next weekend and if we lose at home, we will be in for a rough few weeks. I am hoping that Ohio State only beats us by forty, but there is a chance we lose by sixty to them. Despite their poor play, my day was made in the evening when my hometown team took down the Crimson Tide. It was one of the best games I have ever watched as it felt that each play became more exciting. It was a tight game for the majority of it and with one minute left to go, Alabama seemed to have a clear shot at winning. They had a chance to kick a go-ahead field goal with around twenty seconds left, and the kicker missed it right. Neyland Stadium was electric for the entire night, but no one could prepare for the following moments. With twenty seconds to go, Tennessee's quarterback found an open receiver in two big plays to drive the offense down near the twenty. With three seconds left, Tennessee's kicker put up a sideways spinning ball into the uprights and fans stormed the field. It was recorded that the Tennessee seismograph moved when the kick went through the uprights which shows how loud the stadium was. It was a cool experience to see my future school celebrate the big win and show their spirit.

  1. That sounds like an eventful weekend! My soccer coach throughout high school always believed it was better to have a good loss than a bad win, however for Penn State, it doesn't sound like that was the case. It is hard to keep your head up after losing 41-17, but hopefully they will hold their ground the next couple of games.

  2. I really like your honesty when it comes to the Penn State vs Ohio State game. I thought the Alabama game was crazy. I feel if you're not an Alabama fan then you absolutely cannot stand the team. They just seem so arrogant. It was great to see them lose a game, hopefully they have a few more loses come their way.
